A winter's day in the woods

Winter weekend adventures
Looking for something to do this weekend? How about a stroll through the local woodlands? Pack a satchel, grab a friend and do some exploring!

What to take:
- a friend to explore with
- walking boots (some worn in Doc's are perfect if you have some)
- camera
- thermos filled with whatever takes your fancy (coffee, green tea, etc...)
- packed lunch (make it easy for yourself - some fresh crusty bread with hummus and last night's roasted vegetables & a couple of apples should keep you going)
- umbrella (just in case)
- a winter coat (because your mother would have made you take one)

Log Cabin fingerless punk mittens - handmade in New Zealand
Adventure planning:

Have a look online to see if there are any resources available about walkways in your local area. The Department of Conservation is a good place to start if you are looking to do some serious exploring around New Zealand. The Walking Access Commission have great section on their website detailing different walkways around New Zealand. Otherwise pop down to your local information centre and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

If you intend doing a bit more than just a stroll you should make sure that you are properly prepared for your area and have checked the weather forecast. The Department of Conservation provide some great information on how to plan and prepare. Another good safety resource is the AdventureSmart website, which is a hive of information for any adreneline junkies on how to keep yourself safe.
