Flowerchild: winter florals

Be a rebel and fight the dreary days of winter with flower power. Whether you prefer to rock out in 1950's vintage prints, hippie styles of the of the late 1960's, or 1990's grunge baby doll dresses - take your pick.

Flowerchild style doesn't have to be super sweet and innocent. Just think Elisa Day, the haunting heroine of Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue's duet from The Murder Ballads (1996). Mix a pretty floral dress with a knock out red lipstick (either M.A.C's Damn Glamorous or Russian Red will do the trick) and a don't mess with me smile.

Embrace flowerchild style from head to toe with these gorgeous finds.

Crowning glory

Frida Kahlo style floral crown from New Zealand based Etsy store Miss Wild Flowers
Every proper flowerchild should don a crown of flowers à la Frida Kahlo. Whether you have long flowing locks or a short pixie cut, wear flowers in your hair while you are exploring where the wild roses grow. Hamilton based Miss Wild Flowers has a beautiful range of Frida style floral crowns, including this gorgeous purple rose and baby's breath headband (above) made with artificial silk flowers.

For Frida style hair inspiration, check out how to style maiden braids from the A Beautiful Mess blog. If you feel like a spot of DIY, you can tie-dye an old cotton t-shirt and create Frida style braids to match your floral crown.

What to wear: winter florals

Handmade 1940's style cap sleeve dress from Luminia

Limited edition blue floral print maxi skirt from Ala Mode Wearhouse, made to order in the USA.
Being the middle of winter is no excuse to put away your favourite dress. By layering a pretty floral dress or maxi skirt with super warm thigh highs or woolen stockings (check out the winter options from Sock Dreams for inspiration) you can wear summer brights all year round.

For gorgeous vintage inspired pieces, including this 1940's style poppy print red dress (above, top), there are some gorgeous handmade creations from United Kingdom based Etsy store Luminia. There are a range of custom made dresses available, because who doesn't love something made especially for you. And for those of us who don't do dresses, there are gorgeous Peter Pan collars made from some great textures including velvet, leather and lace.

Don't let anyone tell you that floral prints in winter aren't practical. In my humble opinion any maxi skirt with pockets (above, bottom) gets bonus points for practicality. Based in the United States, Ala Mode Wearhouse have an awesome selection of made-to-order maxi and midi length skirts. On the plus side (no pun intended), their skirts are available in a large range of sizes. Add stockings and boots for the colder months.

Grunge style vintage Doc Martens from Allen Company
The ultimate mix of tough girl and feminine charm comes in the form of these 1990's vintage floral print Doc Marten combat boots (above). From United States-based Etsy store, Allen Company, the hard work has already been done in wearing these boots in.

Doc Martens are the ultimate footwear for stomping around outside on cold and wet winter days. They are perfect for keeping your toes warm on those days you have to just get out there and brave the elements. Mix them with thick wool socks and skinny jeans or winter tights and a floaty frock. If you're a crafty type, take the plunge and knit your own winter socks to go with your winter boots.
